Lot 915
1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-6, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck with lovely light natural toning on both sides, Nice reflective surfaces on both sides. A lovely first year type coin that was only struck in 1796 and 1797. The obverse depicts Liberty facing right with her long flowing curls. The reverse shows a small eagle perched on some clouds, surrounded by a wreath. While a number of these were saved as the first of their kind, locating a high end coin like this always requires some patience. Thin die cracks are noted when carefully examined, all as struck. An important offering for the advanced specialist who needs an example of this type. Pop 1; tied for the finest examples graded at both services for the variety. Estimate Value $35,000 - UP

Lot 916
1800. NGC graded AU-55. A hint of light tone. Only 21,760 struck, and from that meager beginning not many exist today. Especially so in choice AU grades! The surfaces are pleasing, with a few minor scattered marks, and the strike is sharp for this early Draped Bust dime. This date is far less plentiful than the commonly seen 1805 and 1807 issues of this design. Pop 7; 9 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $9,000 - 10,000

Lot 917
1802. PCGS graded MS-60. Nicely toned on both sides. This is the needle beak variety so named for the long pointed beak on the eagle, which actually pierces the nearby star (caused by an engravor's slip when engraving this die). This is the JR-4 variety of the year, and is considered to be the most common 1802 dime variety--if common can be associated with this elusive date! The strike is a trifle soft on the central culrls of Liberty's head and the junction of the right wing and shield just opposite, this striking feature is diagnostic to this variety. A condition rarity at this level. Only 10,975 struck. Pop 1; 6 finer, 2 in 61, 4 in 62. (PCGS # 4472) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP

1802. JR-4, Rarity 4. NGC graded AU-55. Light even toning on both sides and fairly well struck for this usually poorly defined die pairing. Liberty's curls show good separation although her hair near her ear is a bit softly defined. The surfaces show minor handlng marks when closely examined, but overall this is an appealing example of this scarce issue. Rarely are 1802 dimes found in high grade! Don't miss out if you have been seeking a high grade example for your date collection. Only 10,975 struck. Pop 1; none finer at NGC for the variety. Estimate Value $12,000 - 13,000

Lot 919
1807. JR-1, Rarity 2. NGC graded MS-64. A trifle soft in the center as made with some natural clash marks on the obverse. Marvelous delicate "bull's eye" iridescent toning equally distributed on both sides, a feature that is quite desirable and almost never seen so perfectly matched and appealing. A classic near gem Draped Bust dime which is certain to be a major highlight in any advanced collection. Pop 24; 14 finer, 12 in 65, 2 in 66. Estimate Value $12,000 - UP

1809. JR-1, Rarity 4. NGC graded MS-64. Untoned, bright and lustrous. This is the first year of issue and shows the new design by famed engraver John Reich. The mintage was modest, but more importantly, this issue is downright elusive today. Mint State coins are in tremendous demand and seldom offered. Examination will find a few light die cracks, which add interest to this prized condition rarity. A memorable offering! Only 51,065 struck. Pop 4; 4 finer in 65. Estimate Value $10,000 - 11,000

1814. Large Date. NGC graded MS-66. Lightly toned with antique silver gray and gold. A lovely type coin and an early date that is elusive in such high grades. Furthermore examination will find thin die cracks particularly on the reverse as coinage continued long after this die began to shatter. These add further interest and charm to this already elegant coin. Pop 10; 3 finer, 2 in 67, 1 in 67 Star. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1821. Small date. NGC graded MS-66. Lovely rich violet and russet toning. The small date dimes of 1821 are far tougher to find than the large date style coins. Mint State examples are formidable rarities that should not be overlooked by any serious numismatist. Here is one with satin smooth surfaces and bold striking definition throughout. An impressive condition rarity. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1823, 3 over 2. Large E's. PCGS graded MS-65. Light golden toning over llustrous fields. The surfaces are exceptionally smooth and attractive for a large size early dime. Notice on the reverse the size of the E's in the Legend, they are taller than the surrounding letters, hence the variety designation of the Large E's. Here is one of the finer pieces known today, and a coin which will please any specialist for as long as it is possessed. Pop 1; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 4499) Estimate Value $20,000 - UP

1827. PCGS graded MS-65. Nice golden toning over frosty devices. The eye appeal is strong with Liberty's curls boldly impressed and the surfaces carefully preserved. These large sized dimes are quite rare in any gem grade, as they simply didn't survive save for a few random coins. Here is one of the nicest we have seen in a long while. Pop 17; 4 finer, 2 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 4504) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1830. NGC graded Mint Error EF-45, First Strike Off Center. Wow, is this an exciting coin. The first strike was off center by about 40 percent, with the reverse side up, STATES OF clearly shows before Liberty's face into her chest, and her chin shows the Motto LURI of PLURIBUS quite sharp. The eagle's wing is noted in the right obverse field. On the reverse there is a clear star behind the eagle's head from the original obverse strike. Other obverse design elements are also present. While there are a few other double struck Capped Bust dimes known, there probably are precious few that are in such high grade with with such dramtic doubling still present. A nicely toned interesting mint error coin. Expect a well deserved runaway price when this coin crosses the block! Estimate Value $500 - UP

1837. No Stars. NGC graded MS-65. Lovely blue toning with reflective fields. This is the first appearance of the new Gobrecht designs for this denomination. A tiny obverse mark in the left field is old and toned over. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are fresh. This new design lasted only two short years, and by mid 1838 stars were added to the obverse. The addtion of the stars helped to protect the open fields and extend the wear patterns of the devices through prolonged years in circulation. Housed in an Early Style Holder. Pop 27; 38 finer at NGC. Estimate Value $5,000 - 5,500

1837 Lg Date. No Stars. PCGS graded Proof 63. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck with lovely well matched blue toning on both sides. Very popular coin as this is a short lived type, with the No Stars obverse seen only in late 1837 until the opening months of 1838. Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht adopted Thomas Sully's design of Liberty seated on a rock and holding a pole with the cap of freedom at the top. The reverse design was a simple open laurel wreath with fruit, ONE / DIME at the center, and surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. To celebrate this new design perhaps 30 were struck in Proof, and this is one of those prized examples. 25 to 30 known in proof. Pop 7; 13 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4718) Estimate Value $8,500 - 9,000

1844. NGC graded MS-64. A very popular date which was subject to an early example of media hype. A collector named Frank Ross, many decades ago, noticed the small mintage of this date and decided to hoard as many as he could find. Years later Ross began to promote the date, going so far as to give it a name--the "Little Orphan Annie" dime after the famed comic strip character. As collector demand increased, Ross slowly sold off portions of his hoard of 1844 dimes for a welcome profit. This hoard has now been broken up many years ago. However, the name of Little Orphan Annie stuck and is still used to this day. Semi reflective obverse fields. Only 72,000 struck. Pop 3; 1 finer in 65. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP

1853. Arrows. NGC graded MS-67. Well struck and fully white with blazing mint luster and rich eye appeal. The surfaces are outstanding, and the eye appeal is far higher than usually seen for this popular type issue with the Arrows at the date. An enticing coin! 1855. PCGS graded Proof 65. Boldly struck with lovely golden toning on both sides. Only 25 struck with 15 to 20 examples estimated to have survived according to PCGS Pop Report. This example is clearly one of the finest seen, and certainly one of the most attractive. Its importance is further enhanced by the fact that the With Arrows dimes are needed by type collectors, and with so few proofs issued, this is a real treasure destined for a specialized collection. An exceptional coin! Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 4744) Estimate Value $20,000 - 22,000

1858. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. CAC. PQ. Around 300 proofs issued. Boldly struck and mostly untoned. Less than 70 known in proof today. Among the finest known today from this elusive and popular issue. The stars and Miss Liberty's hair are very sharp. PCGS has not graded any coins of this date and denomination in the Deep Cameo category, making this lovely Cameo coin one of the finest seen. Proof coin production was starting to take off in the late 1850s, due to growing collector demand. Things slowed down considerably during the Civil War (1861 to 1865) with many denomations showing mintages of below 500 pieces. Today these issues are highly collectible and many are quite rare. Pop 1; 3 finer in PRCA, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. (PCGS # 84747) Estimate Value $4,000 - 4,500

1859. PCGS graded Proof 67. CAC. PQ. Wonderful rainbow toning spans both the obverse and reverse. Exceptionally appealing, and when combined with a towering grade like PR67, what's not to love here? This is the first year where proof coin production really took off, with mintages in the high 100s or 1000s now routine from this year forward on most copper or silver denominations. Highly collectible and a great coin to begin a Liberty Seated dime collection with. Only 800 struck. Pop 1; 4 finer in 67 Cameo. (PCGS # 4748) Estimate Value $10,000 - UP
